Ian's surge in 2022 flooded much of Matlacha and large parts of Pine Island, and washed out the road near the Matlacha bridge, the only land route to Pine Island. One road in

Pine Island and Matlacha depend on a single road for access. After a storm, it may be closed or restricted, and crews may not be able to reach you right away. We'll tell you honestly what access looks like and what you can safely do in the meantime: document damage, get wet contents out if possible and open windows only if the outside air is drier than inside.

Stilt homes, cottages and farms

Island housing ranges from older cottages and manufactured homes to newer stilt homes. Most properties rely on wells or island water service and septic, and farms have their own irrigation and outbuildings.
