Frances, Jeanne and Nicole
In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne made landfall almost at the same spot on Hutchinson Island, three weeks apart. Port St. Lucie took hours of hurricane-force wind from each, and homes damaged by the first were hit again by the second. In November 2022, Hurricane Nicole came ashore on North Hutchinson Island, bringing surge, erosion and wind to the Treasure Coast. See storm damage restoration.
Milton's tornadoes
When Hurricane Milton crossed the state in October 2024, its outer bands spawned tornadoes across the Treasure Coast. One struck Fort Pierce and nearby communities with deadly results. Tornado damage often means roofs and walls opened suddenly to rain, and quick tarping and water removal make a big difference to what can be saved.
The North Fork and canals
The North Fork of the St. Lucie River runs through the city, and a network of drainage canals carries stormwater to it. During long rain events, the river and canals rise and low lots along them can flood. Much of Port St. Lucie is flat, and rain flooding can happen far from the river. A city of 1980s homes and new ones
Port St. Lucie's older neighborhoods were built heavily in the 1980s and 1990s, the polybutylene era, and many homes are single-story block on slab with water heaters in garages and AC in closets. Western areas like Tradition are much newer. See burst pipe repair.
