Ian's rain
After Ian crossed the peninsula in late September 2022, it stalled rain bands over Volusia County, dropping extraordinary rainfall. Neighborhoods in Daytona Beach, Holly Hill, Ormond Beach, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach flooded, some with water in homes for the first time. Creeks and the Halifax River rose, and many flooded homes were outside high-risk zones. It was a reminder that the Atlantic side can flood from a Gulf-coast storm.
Nicole's surge and erosion
Six weeks later, Hurricane Nicole brought a long stretch of onshore wind, high tides and waves to a beach already weakened by Ian. Along Daytona Beach Shores, Wilbur-by-the-Sea and nearby areas, the dune line eroded and seawalls failed, leaving some beachfront homes and condos undermined or collapsed. November storms are unusual, but Nicole showed that erosion can be as damaging as flooding.
Nor'easters and wind-driven rain
The Volusia coast also gets nor'easters in fall and winter, days of onshore wind that push water up the beach and drive rain sideways into windows, sliders and stucco. Check your flood zone
Flood risk varies from the beachside peninsula to the river and inland creeks. Check your address in the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, and remember that flood coverage is separate from homeowners insurance.
