Irma's landfall, Ian's surge
Hurricane Irma made landfall on Marco Island in September 2017 as a major hurricane, bringing wind damage across the island. Ian in 2022 made landfall farther north but pushed surge into Marco's canals and low streets. The island has been hit hard twice in five years, and it's clear that both wind and surge need to be planned for. See storm damage restoration.
Life on the canals
Most Marco homes sit on canals, with seawalls, docks and pool lanais facing the water. Surge moves up the canals and over seawalls, reaching lanais and sliding doors first. Older homes built lower than current standards are the most exposed and may face the 50 percent rule after major flooding.
Beachfront towers
Marco's beachfront condos are built for storms, but their ground floors, garages and mechanical rooms flood in surge, and upper units can lose AC for days. Leaks inside towers travel down.
